Dr. Hayley Adams

The Compassionate Conservationist

Writing

I love to write.  I am a natural ‘in my head’ kind of a girl, and from the time I was a child, I was often narrating my way through life.  I dreamed of someday writing a book, but to me that someday was mostly a fantasy, with very little reality attached.  As I have journeyed through my life and my career, gaining valuable (and sometimes unusual, comical, or painful) experience along the way, I became more comfortable with the idea that I had something unique to say.

In 2016 I went through a period of intense personal and professional growth, which allowed me the opportunity to examine every facet of my life, and realize that despite the achievements, something was missing. I was feeling a bit disconnected from my passion, and work was feeling too sterile and less meaningful.  I soul-searched my way through it and reconnected with both myself and my passion, and what resulted after this period of self-inventory was my first nonfiction book, Conscious Conservation.

Now that my first book is out of the way, I have a slew of additional book ideas to work on!  I will write more non-fiction related to my professional experience no doubt, but I foresee a novel in the near future as well.  I’ll also be writing blog posts a few times a month to satisfy my desire to write whatever suits my fancy, no editor required.

Thanks for joining my journey.  Here’s to the written word!

TBT to many years ago, over the Christmas holidays
TBT to many years ago, over the Christmas holidays, I was ringing (banding) European migratory songbirds as they stopped to feed in Tsavo, Kenya. We worked at night, capturing and releasing hundreds of birds, and admiring the many beautiful species as we held them in our hands. Those are cotton bags hanging around my wrists; each one holding a bird carefully extracted from delicate mist nets. It was a great experience to work with some wonderful Kenyan birders, and it ignited my passion for birdwatching that I carry to this day. #birdsofkenya #birding #ngulia #tsavo #kenya #birdbanding #conservation #songbirds #birdresearch

Olduvai Gorge, Tanzania. Olduvai is also known as Oldupai, from the Maasai word meaning ‘place of the wild sisal’, as East African wild sisal grows abundantly here. Famous for the many hominid fossils buried in the soil, and the Leakeys of course.
